onchain is moving onframe
...and all the important news around autonomous worlds & onchain gaming
onchain is moving onframe
The web3 native social media app Farcaster is seeing a huge influx of users this week, since people are desperate for some fresh air to the usual twitter non sense.
With their new “Frame” feature, many people are now experimenting with (onchain) games on Farcaster. Frames allow you to deploy a app inside of a post.
Several onchain builders have been trying stuff out, like Baratie with their game F1337.
Gink and Small Brain have also been experimenting with Frames on Farcaster. WASD wrote a great post on this new trend with more examples of gamified frames.
1kx and Bitkraft are diving into composability and game engines
1kx is "modding worlds". Modding worlds is a series with the target of exploring composability of onchain games and autonomous worlds. In their first edition they build a game on top of Downstream by Playmint.
The game is called Hexcraft and is a two team MOBA with different classes.
In their blog post they dive into the game design and challenges they faced when building on top another onchain game. One important conclusion is: “through the process of designing and building Hexcraft, it was apparent that Downstream, while not yet perfect, was on the path of lowering the barrier to entry for many potential new game designers.”
1kx hasn’t been the only VC deep in the trenches of onchain game development. Technoir from Bitkraft has been building a fully onchain game in both MUD and Dojo to compare both engines and get a deeper understanding of what it takes to build an onchain game.
A detailed write-up on both engines and the game itself can be found here.

game of the week: Pirate Nation
Pirate Nation released two big updates this week.
They introduced "Hard Gauntlets". Players can now choose between normal and hard difficulty when playing gauntlets. Hard gauntlets have higher rewards but require an entry fee of 500 PGLD.
They also introduced their creator program. Everyone can apply to become a Pirate Nation creator if they’re posting content about PN regularly. Creators will get access to private creator calls, early access to updates, they have the chance to be amplified by the official social channels, paid opportunities and more.
This is a great sign that some onchain games are getting further in their development and now tackle challenges like user acquisition.
